The Underland Chronicles

The Underland Chronicles is a 5-part series written by the same author as The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins.  Whereas that series was written for a generally older audience, I’d put the target audience of this series somewhere in the middle school range.

The book is about a world beneath our world, the Underland, and revolves around a city called called Regalia.  In Book 1, a kid called Gregor falls through a grate in his laundry room and into this Underland.  Here, he begins his adventures and in each adventure, or book, he is to fulfill a prophecy.  In the first prophecy, he is to become a warrior.

In this world, there are giant creatures that can speak.  Some are friends, and some are foe.  The rats are known as the gnawers, the roaches are known as the crawlers, the bats are the flyers,  and there are others as well.  Because these creatures can speak, they are given a personality and character in such a way that I actually empathized with them.  The next time I saw a spider, I hesitated to kill it.

The books are a pretty quick read.  I found some parts of it to a little bit predictable, though, but that may just be the way the book is written.  Since each book contains a prophecy, the reader is also given the guess how the prophecy will unfold as the characters themselves decipher it and try to see it through.   I found the baby quite annoying as she didn’t add anything to the story except maybe humor.   I also didn’t see why Gregor kept bringing her into battle with him because she just got in the way.  These things would probably be overlooked if I were younger.

In the end, though, after joining the characters on their many adventures together, it is always a little saddening to flip that last page and see them all go.  If you’re into fantasy, I’d give these books a shot.

The Hunger Games

A trilogy for the young adult, this set of books got me back into reading again.  After not picking up a book for who knows how many years, I managed to finish all 3 in just 11 days!

It started off a little slow for me.  I had actually tried reading it once before but I gave up after a few pages. There was no dialogue in the first few pages.  It was all just words from the mind of the protagonist, Katniss.  In order for me to enjoy a book, I need dialogue.  Well, the dialogue came later and I’m glad on my second time around, I kept on reading.

I think the premise of the story is enough to get one interested enough to pick it up and give it a try.  Simply put, there’s a rich city called the Capitol which is surrounded by 12 districts.  Each year, one boy and one girl from each district is put into an arena in a fight to the death.  The winner gets to bring back food for his or her district.  Sound good enough? Sounds good to me.

It may get a little gory at times, but maybe I’m just squeamish.  The author, Suzanne Collins, did a great job writing this series.  The way she tells the story… it really took me to a whole new world.

Highly recommended.

Why I Like My iPad

I never saw what the hype was all about with iPods, iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, etc. I thought they were all overpriced items with cheaper alternatives that just did things better. Then, last October, I got myself an iPad. The iPad 1. It was probably one of my best purchases ever.

I originally owned a 6″ Kindle 3. I liked its e-ink, its portability, and its battery life. Where it fell short was when I used it for PDFs. I found the screen to be too small, and the price of a Kindle DX to be too expensive. So I then went and bought myself an iPad and now I carry it with me as often as I carry my laptop.

The main apps I use on my iPad are

  • Penultimate - This app works well with my Targus iPad Stylus and although Penultimate’s wrist protection doesn’t work as well as I would have hoped, it is still a great app for taking notes with.
  • Dropbox - I use this whenever I want to send any files over to my Ipad.  I just drop my documents into my Dropbox folder on my PC, and then open it up with the Dropbox app on my iPad.
  • GoodReader – A great app overall for reading PDFs and other documents.
  • Netflix – At $8/month, you get access to a large library of Movies and TV shows on your iPad.
  • ABC Player - Just what I need.  More TV to watch.
  • ScoreCenterXL – A convenient way to catch up on sports and check out my players’ stats for my fantasy team.
  • Kindle - Why get a Kindle when I can have the Kindle app?
  • GoToMeeting – Your team may want to host a GoToMeeting.  Instead of following along from your computer, just kick back in your chair or bed and follow along on your iPad.
  • iBooks – I use this to read any eBooks in epub format that I may find online.
  • Pandora – Pretty self explanatory.  I use this and not the version on my phone when I want to conserve my phone’s battery.
  • Buzz Player – Can play most video formats on your iPad.

With all the apps that I use on a regular basis, I’d say it was an excellent purchase decision and has been very useful for me.   And if I ever feel bored, I can always smack around Talking Tom a couple times.
